Metal Recyclers Can Now Report Online

AUSTIN, April 14, 2008 - Metal recycling entities can now register and report metal purchases online Using a new DPS website, metal recycling entities can now electronically register and report purchases, as required by law, making the process easier and faster. Entities who report purchases through this website will no longer have to submit the paper reports of purchases that they are currently sending to the Department.

Using the “Metal Recycling Entity Registration” link on the Department’s home page www.txdps.state.tx.us, users can create an online account and access the website. The website also provides a link to a User Guide containing step-by-step instructions for registration and reporting of purchases. Users can also e-mail questions to metal_recycling_reg@txdps.state.tx.us.

Chapter 1956, of the Texas Occupations Code, requires all metal recycling entities within the state to register with DPS and report purchases of regulated material. The code also establishes civil penalties for violations of the chapter, including the registration requirement. Metal recycling entities that do not register will not be allowed to conduct business and will face other civil penalties, such as fines. To allow entities time to comply with the statute’s registration requirement, the Department will not begin enforcing the requirement until July 1, 2008.

For more information about metal recycling entities and the requirements of Chapter 1956, please visit the Department’s website at https://records.txdps.state.tx.us/DPS_WEB/Metals/index.aspx or simply click on the “Metal Recycling Entity Registration” link on the Department’s home page (www.txdps.state.tx.us).
