Income Taxes Due

Profile America — Tuesday, April 15th. Many people will work late tonight, surrounded by cups of coffee, bits of paper and their calculator — getting their federal income taxes ready to get in the mail by midnight. Debate about tax rates may ebb and flow, but since 1913, there’s been an income tax. The authority came when the 16th Amendment to the Constitution gave Congress the right to levy such taxes. The first year, 350,000 returns were filed. Now, more than 132 million returns are submitted annually. For those tired of doing their own taxes, there are nearly 98,000 tax preparation offices around the nation. We spend over a billion dollars a year to have our taxes prepared.
